A lot has been said about good food. Take this advice and send your cooking skills up a notch.

If you want to use skewers when cooking, remember these helpful hints. To get a better hold on the food, use a square or twisted type metal skewer.

Garlic is one of the more pungent odors that you will ever experience, and you will want to have tricks to get rid of it as soon as possible. Here is a suggestion, after you cook something with garlic, rub your hands on the base of your stainless steel sink for a minute to eliminate the pungent odor off of your skin.

It’s nice to have a pie quickly when unexpected guests arrive. When you don’t have time to create the crust from scratch, use a quality pre-made mix. Add a few tablespoons of sour cream to make the crust flaky so no one will notice that you didn’t create the pie from scratch.

After removing corn from the cob, scrap the cob with the back of your knife. Doing this will extract the “milk” from it. Drizzle the “milk” over the corn to add extra flavor.

To cook healthier, try replacing highly refined goods with whole-grain alternatives when you bake. Enriched white flour and other such refined grain products are low in nutritional value. Even replacing a fraction of them with natural whole-grain products will improve the healthiness of the finished dish. Consult packaging directions for specific replacements; whole-grain products do not always replace refined ones at a 1:1 ratio.

If you have a lot of pets around the house, they should not be with you in the kitchen, if the stove is near the ground. This can present a safety hazard because you want to reduce any risk of your animals getting hurt. Keep all animals and small children away from hot ovens.

Wooden skewers should be soaked in water for a minimimum of thirty minutes before they are used. This way, they won’t burn while cooking. Use two parallel skewers instead of one skewer to avoid food falling off.

When picking out a melon for purchase, make sure that it is still fresh. Many times, people get sick from melons that have gone bad. You can check its freshness by checking the part of the melon that was connected to the vine. If it is soft, then the melon is still good.

When you are storing leftovers make sure that you put them away as soon as possible to inhibit bacteria growth. You should always cover them tightly as well. This not only ensures health but it also will keep your leftovers fresher for a longer period of time. Leftovers are great!

When you are deep frying foods, try not to fry too much food at once. Overcrowding the deep fryer, will cause the oil temperature to drop and the food will not be as crispy. The key to successful deep frying is to keep enough oil around the foods to keep up the temperature.

If a dish requires thinly sliced meats (like some Chinese dishes, for example), freeze the meat before slicing. This makes it hold its shape better when you are slicing, which allows the knife to cut through with a cleaner line. When meat is thawed out, you often have to use a sawing motion to cut the beef, which can make your lines uneven and jagged.

Cook fish on a plank! Use a cedar plank to replicate the taste you get in expensive restaurants right on your campfire. Clean your freshly caught fish and split them open so they are less than one inch thick. Tack the fish to the board and position it beside the campfire so it absorbs the heat of the fire but is not so close that the whole thing catches fire!

Measuring and chopping ingredients before you begin cooking can save you time. It is sometimes possible to do some preliminary tasks in the days preceding the actual meal preparation. In some cases, you will find the longer preparation window will make your end result a flavorful masterpiece. Once you get used to prepping ahead of time, you will always do it.

Store your cooking spices in a cool dry place. This will ensure the longevity and potency of the flavors in your herbs and spices. A dark cabinet away from the stove is the ideal storage place. Spices kept in bright, hot environments usually fail to maintain their flavor long before any expiration date comes.

To prevent dense pie fillings like pumpkin from cracking after cooking, allow the pie to cool on the oven rack. Removing a pie from the hot oven and placing it on a cool counter can cause the filling to expand or contract and as a result crack. Allowing the pie to cool slowly on the oven rack is the best way to get an even, glossy finish on the filling.

Use nonstick cookware when you want to cook healthier. Nonstick pans have a coating on them that makes food easily slide out, even with no oil. This is great for when you are trying to control the fat in your diet. If you do use oil, you will have to use far less. What’s more, nonstick pans are so easy to clean!

Stop grabbing breakfast out and whip up a quick breakfast sandwich at home to save money. To make the perfect round egg for topping a bagel or muffin, cut both the top and bottom off a tuna can and use it as a mold in the skillet while cooking your egg. You can wash and reuse your mold over and over again.

Food is the essence of life, and the power it contains is astonishing. You can use the tips provided to wow your loved ones the next time you cook.
